For the woman orchestrating a household, navigating a career pivot, or building a business, time often feels like the most precious currency we have.
So naturally, many of us try to “create” more time by borrowing it from sleep.
But neuroscience tells us this is one of the most expensive trades we can make.
When we sleep, the brain isn’t simply “off.” It’s performing essential system maintenance — clearing waste, consolidating memories, regulating hormones, and restoring cognitive function. Research shows that sleep plays a critical role in the clearance of brain metabolites (Scullin & Bliwise, 2015).
Without going too deep into the science, here’s what matters most: if you want a more mindful, grounded, high-functioning life, quality sleep is the foundation.
And for women over 40, it becomes even more essential. Sleep supports mental clarity, emotional regulation, hormone balance, and long-term cognitive health — all necessary for leading with energy and intention.
I know firsthand how difficult it can be to truly pause. To put everything away. To stop thinking about tomorrow’s list and simply rest.
That’s why I started creating a small nighttime ritual — less about perfection, and more about signaling safety to my nervous system.
A gentle transition from “doing” into simply being.
Before creating your sleep sanctuary, there’s one simple neuroscience-backed practice that can help quiet the mental noise of tomorrow’s responsibilities.
Researchers at Baylor University found that people who spent just five minutes writing down unfinished tasks and tomorrow’s priorities fell asleep faster than those who journaled about completed activities. The concept is connected to what psychologists call the Zeigarnik Effect — our brains naturally hold onto unfinished tasks, keeping them mentally “open loops.”
So before bed, try this:
Write down the most important things you need or want to do tomorrow.
Add any lingering concerns sitting in your mind.
Then, intentionally close the notebook and softly tell yourself:
“Goodnight. See you tomorrow.” It may sound simple, but this small ritual signals to your brain that it no longer needs to rehearse tomorrow all night long.
That is the power of the pause.
Create the Mood: A 5-Senses Sleep Sanctuary
As we embrace technologies like AI to streamline our businesses and lives, we also need low-tech rituals that help regulate our nervous systems.
Here are a few simple ways to engage all five senses and signal to your brain that the CEO of the business — and the house — is officially off the clock.

Sight
Dim the lights 30 minutes before bed. Put the phone away. Scrolling social media is stimulation, not rest.
Sound
Soft music, white noise, or even the hum of a fan can help calm the nervous system and support deeper restorative sleep cycles.
Scent
Lavender or earthy scents can create a grounding effect, gently bringing you back into the present moment instead of tomorrow’s to-do list.
Taste
A warm cup of caffeine-free tea or milk can become a comforting cue that the day is complete.
Touch
This is my favorite form of “functional luxury”: a silk pillowcase.
Silk is naturally temperature-regulating and incredibly soothing, especially for women over 40 navigating perimenopause and nighttime temperature fluctuations.
And if creating an entire routine feels overwhelming, start small.
Add one ritual at a time, one tiny pause each week. By the end of the month, you may realize you’ve created something much bigger than a bedtime routine:
A nightly practice of returning to yourself.
And remember: it doesn’t need to be perfect — it simply needs to be intentional, because you are focusing on what truly matters.
With love,
Vivian
